These outlines take the Gospel of John on a paragraph-by-paragraph basis. Usually, a chapter would contain between three and five paragraphs. All paragraphs held more then enough for a message, naturally, but some held far too much to handle effectively. Therefore, extra long paragraphs were sometimes split into multiple messages. At least once, the paragraph only contained one sentence. This appeared frighteningly small at first, but ended up having to be edited to fit into a reasonable time!
Please note, that not all Bibles use paragraph marks inside chapters. Furthermore, those Bibles that do sometimes put them in different places! I used a Bible from Church Bible Publishers. That Bible lasted for 20 years of use but when I tried to replace it, found that they discontinued the model. My current Bible (and very excellent!) can be found at Local Church Bible Publishers.
With the normal exceptions, conferences, vacations, and so forth, the Gospel of John filled twenty-three months. It was preached on Sunday Mornings during the main service. These outlines are in a “raw” format, i.e. references may be “nuanced” or perhaps relate to events that then were, but may no longer be, current.
In regards to length, I find that four (4) pages of detailed notes (in contrast with Sunday School one-pagers) hits the usual mark for me in preaching time. For Sunday Mornings specifically, a preacher should be cognizant of the hour. Not only for lunch but out of respect for all, including the visitors and guests. Oddly, I sometimes preach longer sermons from a one-pager than from these more detailed notes.
