The chart below can be inserted into the back cover of The Basic Bible Truths by Lester Hutson. The chart need not always be used when dealing with a lost person in Lesson #4, but can really help when someone is struggling with the idea of “believing” and all that it implies. Some people with a lot of “knowledge” struggle with the faith component of Salvation. Some people struggle with the difference between “turning over a new leaf” and true repentance, or agreement with God about their own sin.
The “airplane” metaphor really helps. It is one thing to believe intellectually that airplanes fly but another thing entirely to get onboard.
Be Aware: This diagram does NOT IN ANY WAY intend to show “works” (steps) for Salvation! Instead, it attempts to make clear that the individual components of full trust on Christ are not enough by themselves. Simple knowledge of the Gospel is required, but not enough in absence of repentance and faith. Repentance by itself is not enough when it only turns “from” sin but doesn't turn “to” God. Many religions practice “blind” faith, but Christians must know whom they have believed!
The Basic Bible Truths is a six lesson evangelistic Bible Study aimed at bringing a lost person to Salvation in Christ. It is superb at teaching anyone enough about the Word of God so that they can make up their own mind. The lessons have been reprinted in a perfect-bound book form by the Christian Law Association (CLA), but these can be a little difficult to use in a real-world situation as they won't lay flat on a table. However, a Kindle version is also available, which might work on an iPad. The difficulty there would fall to preventing distractions during an eternally significant moment!
A better version (in my opinion) is “comb-bound” and can be ordered from Lester Hutson's website. Also available (sometimes) in Spanish and Portuguese.
Since Brother Hutson also provides free-to-download charts, I recommend reading the perfect-bound CLA edition and creating your own “tactical” version with the downloads in a small binder. This will serve handily enough once a person has enough experience with the material to really need only a reminder and an outline.
